NXP Semiconductors N.V. announced that the Barcelona Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM) will use MIFARE® DESFire® for their new mobility card, T-Mobilitat. Barcelona’s long-term ambition to become a self-sufficient and innovative city through progressive urban transformation is one-step closer with the new T-Mobilitat card, which will provide over 5.7 million inhabitants of the city with easy access to public transportation.

Rio de Janeiro will be the first city in Brazil to launch a pilot program enabling mobile NFC ticketing for public transportation. This innovative initiative is a pioneering partnership between RioCard Tecnologia da Informação, Gemalto, Motorola Mobility and the country’s four leading mobile operators - Claro, Oi, Telefónica and TIM, supported by the GSMA. Two hundred users of buses, trains and ferries have been selected to collaborate with these companies in this three-month pilot, which is expected to conclude in December 2013.


New NFC-Based Smart Paper Tickets for Singapore’s Public Transit System

Identive has collaborated with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore to design new smart chip-based transit tickets for the Southeast Asian country’s extensive rail network. TransitLink, as the LTA administrator, has awarded Identive a three-year contract valued at $3.9 million to supply the tickets, which include NFC chips from Infineon Technologies.
